Nestled in the rugged Siskiyou Mountains, the landscape features unique serpentine soils and forested ridges of Jeffrey pine and Douglas fir. This deep river canyon offers stunning vistas, riverside boulders for sunbathing, and is a prime corridor for spotting bald eagles and river otters near the Six Mile Day Use Recreation Area. Nearby Attractions Six Mile Campground serves as a central hub for several outdoor attractions along the Wild and Scenic Illinois River. Immediately adjacent is the Six Mile Day Use Area, which is highly popular for its deep, emerald-green swimming holes, rock jumping ledges, and riverside picnic pavilions. A short distance away, you can visit the historic Swinging Bridge, a wooden suspension bridge providing 60-foot-high views over a rocky river ravine and access to secluded swimming and scuba spots. For those interested in more active pursuits, the Illinois River Trail begins nearby, offering rugged backpacking routes through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness.
