Rainy-day tent kit, tested by three kids in a Wisconsin downpour: Uno, a deck of regular cards, one new $5 toy they've never seen (deploy at hour two, not hour one), and enough hot chocolate to outlast the weather. You can't fight rain, you can only out-cozy it.

Honest question for the parents here: what age did you start real tent camping? We did backyard runs at 3, first campground at 4, and honestly the 4-year-old handled it better than I did. Curious what worked for other families.

Camp hack for the under-8 crowd: drop a glow stick in an empty water jug and you've got a lantern they can carry, throw, and sleep next to without burning anything down. We bring a dozen. Total cost: $4.

The packing list that saved our family trips, refined over many muddy years: each kid gets ONE bin they pack themselves (with veto rights), a full outfit lives sealed in a gallon bag per kid per day, and there is always — always — one more pair of socks than you think you need.

Spent a weekend camping at Elizabeth Furnace, and it was pure magic. The creek whispered all night, the fire crackled just right, and the stars looked close enough to touch. Woke up to birdsong and coffee by the water — couldn’t have asked for a better reset. If you ever need peace, this place delivers.
